Abstract In this paper, we introduce a novel system, which is named VisPhoto, that assists people with visual impairment in solely photographing. Though it is known that people with visual impairment want to take photos, they are not good at or even unable to include the subject in the camera frame. Existing photo-taking assistance systems give voice or sound instruction to the user so that the user can take a good photograph. The proposed system utilizes an omni-directional camera that can take a photograph containing the surrounding scene of the camera. As its post-processing, a region which reflects the user's preference and maximizes the beauty score is cropped as a ``photo.'' The proposed method obtained positive reputation through two user studies; (1) the effectiveness and user interface of the proposed system were evaluated by eight people with visual impairment; (2) the quality of ``photos'' generated by the proposed system was evaluated by ten sighted people.
